Now isn't that funny? I know. It's not that funny, but you don't need to be so hard on me.

This will be an exploration of concepts in the Pokémon videogames that are often misunderstood, just like that kid who always sat alone in the middle school lunch room (read: all of us.) Get ready to have your mind blown like that Psyduck on your right.

Chapter 1: Brine, Or: I Contend that "Brine" is Almost as Disgusting of a Word as "Moist."

Section 1: What You Think it Does

You think that this move, Brine, doubles in strength when you have less than 50% of your health. Because you erroneously think this, you go around saying to all of your Poképals that you are going to "totes run Brine on a Poke with a focus sash then get my brine up in here when I have 1 hp for like tons of damaaaaaaageeeeebraaaaah!" because you talk like that. You are incorrect. (If it makes you feel any better, I thought the same thing.) Here's why you are (and at one point I was) wrong...

Section 2: What It Actually Does

Brine actually doubles in strength when the target, i.e. your opponent's Pokémon, has below 50% of its health. That means that Brine will only really be worthwhile when your opponent is already almost taken out. This is unfortunate, because chances are that if you have your opponent down to less than half of their health, you probably don't need that damage doubling. Sadface.

Chapter 2: Trick Room, Or: If I Were not a Pokémon Fanatic, I Would Think that "Trick Room" Was Some Sort of Magician Superstore

Section 1: What You Think it Does

You think that Trick Room changes speed stats so that slower Pokémon become faster and faster Pokémon become slower. Because of this, you want to run Electroball on a Magnezone, because it's measly 60 base speed will jump because of Trick Room, and since Electroball gets stronger when you are faster than your opponent, you'll do some insane damage!

Section 2: What it Actually Does

Trick Room does not alter speed stats. It just makes slower Pokémon attack first. In other words, your Magnezone is still slower than its opponent, it just attacks first because of Trick Room.

Chapter 3: Lagging Tail, Or: I'm Pretty Sure that They Murder Onyx to Get These Things. #OccupyPewterCity

Section 1: What You Think it Does

I'll make this one short. You think that it lowers your speed so that Gyro Ball becomes your best friend.

Section 2: What it Actually Does

I'll make this one almost as short. It doesn't do that. It just makes you attack last, doing nothing to your speed stat, so Gyro Ball doesn't become your best friend. Stupid Gyro Ball. It should be more friendly.

~

I'm just kidding. I don't think you talk like I mentioned you did earlier. I don't think you're dumb. You are all beautiful and brilliant people. Catchya next week.

AOTW: Rock Head

Everything in life has pros and cons, trainerinos and trainerettes. For every decade with Dexter’s Laboratory, there’s another one with Dude, What Would Happen? Shame on you, Cartoon Network for allowing such an epic failure. The same goes for Pokémon. Sometimes you find yourself with the opportunity to pack a wicked powerful attack, but the recoil cost is too high, and you don’t even get the comedy value of emasculating Will Smith. And there’s nothing you can do to stop it.

G’night, everybody!

Okay, c’mon, you guys know my schtick by now, I gotta mess with you a little bit! This is Ability of the Week: Rock Head!

One of the original Abilities from generation three, Rock Head prevents recoil damage from damage from all attacks except for a missed Jump Kick, Hi Jump Kick, or Struggle. Eighteen pokémon can gain Rock Head as their Ability legitimately, and one special case, but we’ll get to that.

There’re plenty of noteworthy Rock Head users, such as Steelix, and Aggron. The most common use of Rock Head you’ll find is negating the recoil of Double Edge, which all of the pokémon with the Ability can acquire. The other notable attacks you’ll likely use with Rock Head are Take Down and Head Smash, but you can also use Wood Hammer with Sudowoodo. When it comes to Take Down, you’re probably going to want to go with Double Edge over it, but hey, it’s an option. Let’s talk about the meat and potatoes, though, which is Head Smash. While it only has 80% accuracy, Head Smash sits pretty at 150 base damage, and normally inflicts recoil damage equal to half of the damage dealt to the opponent. Fortunately for you, Relicanth learns it naturally and has access to Rock Head, and Aron (and by proxy, the big beast Aggron) can get Head Smash by breeding.

I did also find an interesting item while researching for this article that I’d like to share. There’s a hidden bonus Rock Head-user lurking in one of the in-game trades in Pokémon White Version. In Driftveil City in both Black and White, there is a trainer who will offer a Basculin in exchange for a Minccino. In each version, the less common version of Basculin will be traded to you, but only in White will you receive the blue-striped version that has Rock Head as its Ability, and this is the only way that one can be acquired.

That does it for me this week, folks! Have a week!

Even decks that run the silliest Pokemon lines still stand a solid chance if they’ve built their trainer base correctly. With the EX wave dropping into the format there are a few trainers that I think will spike in popularity before states.

The card that a lot of people have been talking about is Lost Remover. Its an important addition into your deck to get rid of Double Colorless Energy, which every EX is going to use. The card that people aren’t talking about is Crushing Hammer. Lets do some Pro-Con work here. Lost Remover is a guarantee removal of a special energy. Crushing Hammer flips a coin to remove any energy. So we can’t count on Crushing Hammer but it has more playability. How to pick between these two? Really it comes down to Junk Arms. If you’re running Junk Arm, and you like to push chance, I think Crushing Hammer is the better pick. I’d run something like one or two Lost Removers and then three to four Crushing Hammers.

Second pick is Switch. Now before you disregard this entire paragraph because you think you know what switch does let me explain my thinking. Your opponent is most likely running Pokemon Catchers. Now Catcher is a great card, no one should say otherwise, but it’s a one trick pony. You catch up something you want to one hit KO or you catch up some threat that you want to put first damage on. But Switch! Switch is a magic shop full of tricks. Its an ideal counter to Catcher for starters. After someone has just removed your energy so you can’t retreat, you can pull something back to the bench and hopefully bring up a ready attacker. Its big draw for me in the Mewtwo EX deck I’ve been playing is its ability to get out of status conditions. Nothing has felt worse for me in Pokemon, then having to give up two prizes because I’ve been paralyzed turn after turn. Switch is a strong card with a lot of options and is worth running 2 to 3 in your deck.

The final card is Max Potion. I know, I know. What weird combo did I build up to make Max Potion and EXs work?! There is no combo. If you’re going to be retreating to keep your EX alive why not Max Potion them before you start resetting them up. Max Potion is also an amazing card to play with Mewtwo EX who only needs a double colorless to use energy ball. Since its release Max Potion has been scarcely played and I think this format with EX’s is its best time to shine.

Good luck to one and all as states is fast approaching. If you’re play testing with anyone and notice something cool or something you think might be difficult to get around post it in the comments below.

PKMN of the Week: Braviary

Hopefully some people out there are able to enjoy the President's Day weekend like I am. While other parts of the country may generally ignore President's Day, here in Washington, DC, the Federal Government and most of the universities are closed. In honor of presidents Washington and Lincoln, we get a day without traffic jams.

Around DC one of the most frequent sites is the great seal of the united states. I get to see it every morning while walking my dog - we pass some uniformed secret service cars on our walk. I also frequently see a variation of the great seal when I'm at work.

Did you know that these seals feature one of the Unova Pokémon? That's right, our founding fathers selected Braviary, the valiant pokémon, as a symbol of the United States throughout the world.

Something that has bothered me about Braviaries - they're all male. No girl Braviaries about to make Braviary eggs with. Of course, if someone only lives in the world of Pokémon White, they'd never know that there is a female compliment to Braviary, the Mandibuzz. Unfortunately, if you leave a Braviary and a Mandibuzz at the Day Care Center, all you're going to get is a Vullaby. If you want to make some Rufflets you'll have to leverage a Ditto in there (which makes me think that the Braviaries must migrate to Giant Chasm from time to time to make Rufflets, but that is pure speculation). Interestingly enough, eagles and vultures both fall within the Falconiformes order of birds, so their relationship is not so beyond evolutionary consideration.

Another interesting factor when thinking of Braviary is that he is a combination Normal/Flying type. I have always thought it strange when Normal types combine with anything - I mean, they're just normal, right? Well, it turns out that there is only one pure Flying-type out there - Tornadus. There are actually quite a few Normal/Flying-type Pokémon out there. Keep in mind that this dual-typing means that neither Ground nor Ghost-type moves will touch a Braviary.

Braviary's strongest points are his high HP capacity and high Attack. His other stats are decent, but pretty level across the board. Try to get your IVs in HP and Attack and then try for an Adamant nature (boosting Attack and decreasing Special Attack). Sometimes when battling I try to whomp my opponent quickly and a healthy physical attacker may just do the trick.

Non-Dream World Braviaries can either have the Keen Eye or Sheer Force abilities. Keen Eye is nice to have (prevents loss of Accuracy), but, honestly, how many people keep Sand Attack as part of their core move set? Dream World Braviary can have the Defiant ability (Attack raises two stages if another stat is lowered) but I'm not a fan because it does not work like the Justified ability (Attack goes up one stage when hit by a Dark-type move). Defiant is not triggered if Braviary is hit by one of his teammates (Justified is). So, as they say, Defiant is a bit hit or miss. At least with Sheer Force you know what you are getting. I should also mention that if you keep a Keen Eye Braviary at the head of your party he will act somewhat like a permanent Repel, keeping low level Pokémon from springing out unexpectedly.

Moves to suit a Braviary? First off, I insist on Aerial Ace. It is a physical attack, you get STAB, and it never misses. I cannot count the number of times I have been beat down by Aerial Ace. It always comes through in a pinch. The other high powered attacks Braviary learns by leveling up come at a cost - with Superpower you drop Attack and defense with every hit, Brave Bird hits you back with a 30% recoil, and Thrash leads to confusion (which you can fight with a Persim Berry if you want to go that route). Some of the mid-level moves with STAB are worth keeping in mind - Crush Claw works well with a Sheer Force bonus, as does Air Slash (although Air Slash is a Special Attack).

A word to the wise - just avoid Sky Drop. I know it sounds awesome and sweet. Sure, a Braviary can pick up a car and carry it. I wish it worked. Unfortunately, because of the Sky Drop glitch you still can't use it in regulated competition. Hopefully it will be fixed someday but for now just leave it.

Some TMs/HMs to consider? I always like Return, because it is easier to make a Pokémon happy than to make it unhappy, have Facade on hand for punishing status effects, and maybe Shadow Claw if you are up against a Ghost-type (a physical Ghost-type move). Fly is out there, obviously, and you do get STAB for it; in my experience only the inexperienced use Fly in battle as a way of delaying their eventual demise.

If you are comfortable with your Braviary's Attack stat, why not have him hold a Choice Band? You do get locked into one move, but think about it, Aerial Ace + IV for Attack + Adamant Nature + Choice Band? You'll be knocking some people out! You may also want to have him hold a Cell Battery - your Attack goes up one stage once when you are hit by an Electric-type move. That's an interesting way to turn a weakness around.

All cards on the table, I have a Rufflet in one of my boxes but I haven't evolved him into a Braviary yet. Then again, I caught my own Vullaby and haven't evolved her either. Let me know your experiences with America's Pokémon, Braviary!

Saturday Sketch

There are the heart-shaped Pokémon - Luvdisc, Alomomola - but honestly, they're fish. Gross. Have you ever tried to love a fish? The sentiment is not returned.

I'm also knocking out the pink Pokémon - your Igglybuffs, Jigglypuffs, Wigglytuffs, Clefairy, Clefable, not even Snubbull or Chansey. Too easy. Plus, I have a special place in my heart for pink team building which I'll have to discuss later.

So who wins out as the romance Pokémon? The award goes to Totodile. I'll confess, I'm a fan of the cartoon series and recently have been watching the Johto Journeys on Boomerang. Have you ever seen the episode Love, Totodile Style? I recommend you seek it out. I'd argue little Romeo Totodile chasing around the water-type ladies is his best performance next to his dancing the Can-Can on the back of a Miltank trying to use Rollout.

Totodile, the water-type starter from Generation II. According to one of my friends, he's the only starter who "stays cute" through all of his evolutions. Outside of cuteness, Totodile comes with the standard water-type starter ability Torrent - water-type moves get a boost when HP drops below 1/3 (i.e., yawn). If you manage to catch a Dream World Totodile he'll come with Sheer Force which gives you a bit more flexibility over Torrent.

I'll confess, I'm not a huge fan of water-types. Partially because my best Pokémon battling friend swears by them (don't get me started on him and his Squirtle), partially because they tend to be favored by dudes who have to prove how macho they are. Here's the secret, though, guys - water-types have the fewest weaknesses (grass and electric) compared to either the fire or grass starters. If you really want to prove how tough you are, start out with a grass-type and really battle your way to the top.

Want to make the little romantic a member of your unevolved competitive party? Well, sadly, he actually doesn't learn a lot of water-type moves as he is evolving, and the ones he does learn don't have a lot of accuracy. Most likely at this point you'll be working with the Sheer Force ability, so try to give your Totodile some moves from leveling up that would have had secondary effects (Sheer Force boosts power while dropping secondary effects). Your options here are Crunch, Ice Fang, and Bite. Moves to teach your Totodile include Ice Beam, Rock Tomb, and Scald (here you get STAB and Sheer Force bonus). Train him for special attack if you're aiming for Ice Beam and Scald (sounds pretty sweet to me . . .) physical attack for the others.

If you do raise your Totodile as an attacker, have him hold on to some Eviolite for battling. It will boost his defense and special defense by 50% each, without your having to spend time training up those stats.

This Valentine's Day, make a little room in your heart for a snuggly Totodile. He may bite, things may get a little wet, but you're bound to have a good laugh in the end.

Featured Team

Shattered gemstones chapter 7: Hunters

Chapter 7

Hunters

Damian

So many people. Too many. But we have to keep moving, keep ourselves mixed with the rest of the crowd. Things on deck become a little more confined as more people trickle on board, but I don’t pay much heed. I just walk, silently, Ariana keeping hold of my hand and letting me be her guide.

Time passes quickly. Far too quickly for my liking. We have to find him soon. It’s not a huge ship, but there are enough people on board now that Lucas can keep himself hidden easily, if he wants. It’s a double-edged sword.

“Damian.” Ariana’s voice stops me in my tracks. She sounds terrified. I turn to look at her.

 “What’s wrong?”

“I think someone’s following us. Not Lucas, someone else.”

My head snaps from her face to the crowd behind her. Many people are milling about, just like everywhere else on the ship, but there is one person standing very still.

“Ari, describe him for me.” I say, not averting my gaze.

“Um, he’s not very tall, but he looks maybe 18...he’s got blond hair and a blue jacket…do you see him?”

“Yeah. He’s waving us over to him.”

 Toby

Following the man and girl was something I decided to do idly. I admit I let my curiosity get the better of me, but I had nothing better to do. Besides, if he was looking for someone in particular, maybe I could help him out, make an ally.

As more people board the boat, the crowd pushes us towards the ship’s back end, where my idle quarry and I were headed anyway. What catches the corner of my eye is a particular man among the crowd. He doesn’t appear too out-of-the-ordinary at first; his hair is brown with shaggy bangs, he’s wearing a collared shirt and glasses, and he has some tattoos on his arms. What calls my attention is the way he’s acting.

He bustles through the crowd in a prowling manner, keeping a slow but purposeful pace. Whenever someone bumps into him, he takes that as a queue to move swiftly past them, accelerating his pace for a moment. He has a demeanor similar to that of my own target, including the hunting eyes. Except his eyes aren’t scanning the crowd. They’re dead focused on one person a ways ahead of him in the crowd; the same guy I’m following.

I start to consider what this could mean; the first, and admittedly most appealing, possibility is that these two are simply friends looking for each other. This, however, is quickly discounted. This closer man is moving too decidedly slowly. He’s taking his time, so as to stay unnoticed. In addition, I notice the Pokemon walking at his side; A Houndoor. It walks with fangs bared and claws unsheathed, and moves with a slow, stalking pace, keeping low to the ground; a hunter’s pace.

So that, my mind decides, leaves two possibilities. One: This man is waiting for the couple he follows to find him. Two: he’s waiting for them to be alone, or nearly alone. I have a talent for reading people, a useful skill I’ve always been gifted with. I can see the malice in his face; it’s visceral, practically dripping off like sweat. As I see it, he’s a predator, and the two people we’re both following are his prey. In which case, I decide, I may as well try to protect them.

I make the quick decision that it can’t hurt anything if this guy sees me approach the two who walk ahead of us. He doesn’t know who I am, or what intentions I may have.

With this in mind, I break into a slow jog, dodging through people. AS I get gradually closer to the two people, the girl turns. I don’t think she had noticed me until then, but her eyes fix on me when she notices. I slow to a fast walk. The girl and her brother keep moving as well, but she keeps her eyes fixated on me. I look right back, slowing to a stop. Hoping she’ll stop as well.

She turns her head away, and at first I think all is lost. But then, she and her brother stop, and after a moment of conversing, the brother looks in my direction. I nod at him, and beckon him over with one hand. He says something else to his companion, and then slowly approaches.

 Damian

I approach our apparent follower warily. He could be working with Lucas.

“Hey there,” he says, giving a friendly wave.

“Are you with Jacob?” I ask defensively. No point in skirting around it.

He raises an eyebrow. “Jacob? Don’t know him…unless…” He furrows his brow for a moment, then nods. “Yeah, that makes sense…is Jacob about my height, brown hair, tattoos, and a Houndoor?”

That catches me off-guard. He knows what Jacob looks like, but acts as if he doesn’t know him. Might as well prod a little.

 “Yeah…do you know him?”

“Actually,” he says, shuffling his feet and looking over his shoulder. “That’s why I’m talking to you. No, I don’t know this Jacob, but I’ve been watching him. He’s following you.”

I reflexively look around me. “Stay calm.” he says. “Come with me into the cabin, and I’ll explain. You can trust me.”

“How the hell do I know that?” I ask coldly, my mind frosting over with fear for myself and Ariana. Who is this guy?

He sighs, glancing behind him again. “Alright, look.” he says, speaking fast. “the way this guy’s following you, I think he’s waiting for you to be alone. I’ve seen people like him before, and he’s definitely following you, but waiting for the right circumstances.”

I look into his eyes. I really have no idea what to do. I don’t know this guy, who seems to understand more about Lucas than I do. I’m clueless.

“Okay, listen.” He says, running a hand through his hair. “We need to get you two somewhere safe NOW, so I’ll give you what little more I can to make you trust me. My name is Tobias Rye. I’m 19 years old. I was raised by my father, and we traveled a lot all my life. I’ve seen a lot of kinds of people, and I know how to read them. Right now, I just see two people in danger, and I’d like to try and help them. So please, just let me help.”

I feel a hand shatter through the ice in my mind. Ariana’s hand. I look to my left, and she’s standing there, looking at me. There’s no fear in her eyes, quite the opposite. There’s a lot of courage there, more than I’ve ever seen from her. I think she passes a little to me, because I feel a little better too. I turn back to our new acquaintance.

“…okay, Tobias Rye. We’ll trust you.”

Well hello there, Abiliteers! Uncle Wil is back to bring you up to speed on yet another passive pokémon power. In this case, we’re looking at one that grants your pokémon a Hermes-like boost to their Speed! Just be careful not to fly too close to the sun (how many of you Greek mythology buffs just yelled at me? Ha!) This is Ability of the Week: Quick Feet!

Quick Feet, which I’ve briefly mentioned before as the spiritual cousin of Guts, was introduced in the fourth generation, and was originally only usable by five pokémon over three evolutionary lines. With the addition of the Dream World, though, the ranks of Quick Feet have swelled to twelve monsters and seven families. As for Quick Feet’s effect, when the pokémon with the Ability is afflicted with a status condition, their Speed stat will receive a 50% boost. The three (fully evolved) pokémon that have access to this Ability naturally are Granbull, Mightyena, and Ursaring. In fact, David recommended Quick Feet on Ursaring in papa bear’s POTW Article in May of last year. Dave, I love ya, but I have to respectfully disagree. Guts is just clearly the better Ability on Ursaring from where I’m standing. At only 55 base Speed, the 50% boost is just not going to do enough to really benefit him. And Mightyena and Granbull are in much the same boat with 45 and a somewhat viable 70 on Mightyena. But when the Dream World offers far better candidates, I’ve got to lean on the side of the snooze button.

Not counting the unevolved pokémon, there are three Dream World Quick Feet users: Linoone, Scolipede, and Jolteon. Lioone is pretty much the Raticate of its generation, but you could use it as a viable status inflictor with its base Speed being boosted to 150. First of all, like Guts, the Flame Orb and Toxic Orbs will be your best friends, and Linoone has access to both Fling and Switcheroo, which we discussed in Ability of the Week: Klutz. Linoone’s arsenal also includes the dreaded Sand Attack, as well as Double Team, Swagger, Substitute, and Façade. If none of this sounds that appetizing, don’t worry, I’m just getting started. Let’s move on to Scolipede. The Megapede Pokémon has a respectable base Attack of 90, and an already impressive 112 in Speed. Add the Quick Feet bonus to that, and we’re looking at 168! With access to attacks like a STAB’d Megahorn, Double Edge, STAB’d Poison Jab, etc, plus that formidable Speed stat, Scolipede with Quick Feet is a powerhouse! …Except that it can’t be poisoned, paralysis risks full paralysis, and a burn reduces your Attack stat.

I’d be worried that this Ability is totally useless and I wasted my time writing this thing. If I were an idiot and didn’t research this thing beforehand, that is. Wait. I didn’t.

JOLTEON, SAVE ME!!

*insert Batman theme here (Michael Keaton, not Adam West)*

Yes, Jolteon! One of the original three Eeveelutions, lynchpin of Blue’s team in Pokémon Yellow Version (assuming you won in Oak’s lab and Viridian City), and my personal favorite of Eevee’s kin behind Umbreon, Jolteon sports the highest Speed of any Quick Feet user and a wicked 110 base Special Attack. Finally! Something we can play with! With Quick Feet active, Jolteon’s base Speed is just below 200, coming in at a very impressive 195. As a special attacker, Jolteon is an ideal candidate for the Flame Orb as diminishing its Attack stat won’t matter. With a base HP of only 65, the depleting health is worrysome, but that’s the risk you run with any Electric-type. Let’s arm the Lightning Pokémon, shall we? Obviously, Thunderbolt is a must-have, but what about the rest of Jolteon’s arsenal? I’d suggest Thunder Wave, but my concern is with such low defensive capabilities, every turn is precious. I’d rather concentrate on pure offense. Consider Shadow Ball, Hidden Power, and maybe even Hyper Beam as a last resort. In a frustrating incident of counter-intuitiveness, most of the variation in Jolteon’s move pool are physical attacks, but that still doesn’t put a damper on that quick-strike Thunderbolt!

Okay, so Quick Feet isn’t the end-all, be-all of Abilities, creating the greatest Sweepers the game has ever seen. But it is a viable method of getting slower monsters to step on the gas, and in two cases, making some of the more fleet-feeted ‘mons into speed demons. And that wraps things up for me this time! We’ll see you next week!
